Need a little help deciding which trolling plate is right for you? Here is a quick guide to trolling plate features:

Material: Serious fishermen typically gravitate to metal plates made form marine grade anodized aluminum and stainless steel. If you’re looking for a budget solution, then a nylon plate may be what you’re looking for.

Automatic vs. Manual: Most trolling plates require manual engagement and disengagement. Pull the cord and the plate drops and locks into place; pull it again while throttling up and the plate pushes up and lock into the up position. This provides you with positive control, but can lead to damage to the plate if you throttle up with the plate down. The EasyTroller has incorporated a pressure relief valve to help protect you against plate damage.

Automatic plates like the Trol-A-Matic are spring loaded and when the pressure against them is low enough, they will drop into place. When you are ready to go, simply throttle up and the plate is pushed up out of the way.

Coast Guard Safety Updates

Coast Guard Requests Use 911, not "*CG" on Your Cell

With the exception of Alaska, the US Coast Guard is asking mariners to stop using the "*CG" speed dial for emergencies. If you are using a cell to report an emergency use the standard 911 emergency number. Apparently the issue is that this features is not handled consistently across the country and there is a real possibility hat the calls could get misdirected.. The SARSAT System Switched to 406MHz February 1, 2009

After a lengthy transition period, the various agencies managing the SARSAT (Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking) that locates and alerts authorities of EPIRB or ELT activations. The older versions, operating on 121.5 or 243MHz are no longer suppoerted as of February 1, 2009. The new system provides much greater accuracy and fewer false alerts. The upshot? If you are still using an EPRIB or ELT on the old frequencies, get a new one. If you aren't sure, check. Your life could depend on it.
